how it works
A Culture Where Teens Thrive
Clinical care, family support, adventure learning, and pro-social experiences work together to help adolescents recover, grow, and thrive.
How Healing Happens
We use the TAFS Model across all three programs, adapting it to fit the needs of each community we serve.
Engagement Opens the Way
Pro-social activities and shared experiences allow teens to join without feeling singled out. Defensiveness lowers when participation feels safe.
Connection Creates
Lasting Trust
Consistency matters more than messaging. Over time teens begin to attach safely to adults who follow through and peers who reinforce growth.
Clinical Work Goes Deeper
As trust develops, therapy becomes more effective — addressing trauma patterns, substance use behaviors, grief, identity, and emotional regulation.
Parents Reinforce the Progress
Family sessions strengthen communication and rebuild trust at home — reinforcing the progress teens make at TAFS so it holds after each session.
Progress Happens Over Time
Recovery is built through consistency. Over time, teens develop stronger coping skills, healthier relationships, improved emotional stability, and greater confidence.
Families begin to feel more equipped. Students become more engaged. Youth in foster care gain support as they move toward independence.
The path looks different for every teen — but the foundation is the same: clinical care, connection, family support, and real-life engagement.
“TAFS is a good afterschool activity that helped give me a schedule that supported my recovery and showed me how to have fun sober. It also opened me up to new friends, new ways of life and introduced me to AA.” – Carson F.
Why Engagement Matters
A teen who participates has a better chance to heal. Engaging them from the start is essential.
When teens feel connected, they are more open to clinical support. When they feel they belong, they are more willing to participate. When they experience success in real-life settings, they begin to believe change is possible.
That is why TAFS combines clinical rigor with relational engagement — helping adolescents move from simply receiving services to actively building a healthier future.
“I appreciate the fact that my family relationships are better now. I also have learned to be open and honest with others.” – Anna M.
What Families Can Expect
At TAFS, families can expect a structured, supportive environment where adolescents are understood and challenged in developmentally appropriate ways.
Teens are met with care, accountability, and connection. Parents are supported as part of the process. Clinical work is reinforced through peer relationships and meaningful experiences.
The result is adolescents healing while staying connected to home, school, family, and community.
“I appreciate TAFS for the community it provides for me when times get tough.” – Layne H.
